Step inside this majestic library building to discover Italian Renaissance artistic designs, browse a historical map collection or attend a hip-hop festival.

Central Public Library of St. Louis is a fascinating place to visit for everything from reading to admiring artwork and attending cultural events. Completed in 1912, it’s the main branch of the St. Louis Public Library, which has 16 locations and a collection of 4.6 million items. Relax with a book in the elegant rooms of the library. Study a map exhibit and join a guided tour of the building.

Before entering, stop for a moment to appreciate the library’s striking granite exterior. The work of the renowned architect Cass Gilbert, it displays elements of Beaux Arts and neoclassical styles. Notice the arched windows of the southern façade giving the impression of an arcade and adorned with bas-reliefs.

Delight in graceful public spaces at every turn. Shimmering marble floors, grand Corinthian columns and chandeliers characterize the main hall. Copies of artistic features from Rome’s Pantheon and the Vatican bring touches of the Italian Renaissance to the building. A particular highlight is the Periodicals Room, which has a replica of Michelangelo’s Laurentian Library ceiling.

Find books arranged according to themes such as children’s literature, juvenile and science and technology. The history of St. Louis and its surrounding areas comes to life via a map collection. Exploration, military, railroad, topographic and other maps showcase the many different styles of cartography.

Free, hour-long guided tours of the library take place on Monday and Saturday. Walk with a docent volunteer to learn about the creation of this architectural treasure. Ask for a schedule of current exhibits and events taking place. Hip Hop Appreciation Week in May is an annual celebration of the hip hop movement, with fashion shows, graffiti workshops, dance classes, poetry readings and live music.

The library stands in the Downtown West neighborhood, about a 15-minute stroll from Union Station light rail stop. Park for a fee on the neighborhood’s streets. Campbell House Museum and the 3,100-seat Stifel Theatre are short walks away.

Visit Central Public Library of St. Louis for free from Monday to Saturday. It stays open later in the evening on Wednesday and Thursday.
