Enjoy a tropical beach vacation in San Juan and explore the many historic sites in one of the oldest cities in the Americas. The oldest part of the city, known as Old San Juan (El Viejo San Juan), is a small island connected to the mainland by bridges. Here, you’ll find many of the city’s most popular attractions, historic buildings, restaurants and shops. Visit the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, which has a wide range of exhibits, regular cultural events and a beautiful botanical garden. Just a short walk away is the Catedral de San Juan where you can attend a Spanish mass or view the final resting place of Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer and the first Governor of Puerto Rico.No trip to the area is complete without a visit to the San Juan National Historic Site. This massive complex is World Heritage listed and includes many of the city’s defensive walls and fortresses. Plan to spend several hours here as you can explore dungeons and tunnels, and climb towers for 140-feet-(42-meter) high views of the city.San Juan is well known for its excellent shopping, so make the time to wander along the Calle del Cristo, Old San Juan’s popular shopping street. You’ll find famous international boutiques alongside merchants selling local goods. Those looking to relax on the beach should head east of Old San Juan to Isla Verde. This beach is close to the main attractions, but far enough away to be a good place for some peace and quiet. For those with children, Luquillo Beach, where coral reefs protect a lagoon, is a great option.Despite severe traffic congestion, residents and visitors to San Juan primarily travel by car, although a free tourist trolley runs in Old San Juan. Some areas offer a metro system and public buses, but the best option for visitors is usually either walking the shorter distances or taking advantage of a local trolley or taxi service.

Best Time to Visit San Juan

San Juan stays reward good timing, whether you are after sun-warmed beaches or a quieter spin through its colorful historic core. When deciding the best time to visit San Juan, think about whether you want lazy afternoons on the sand in Condado or unhurried walks around Old San Juan’s forts and plazas.

Drawing on Expedia Group booking data from 2025, here is how San Juan demand, pricing, and travel patterns shift throughout the year.

When to Visit San Juan at a Glance

  • Best weather: December to April
  • Most crowded: March, August, and July (about 1.8x busier than the calmest months)
  • Cheapest months: October, September, and June (about 31% lower than peak)
  • Fewest crowds: October, September, and November
  • Major travel spikes: March and late summer, with demand peaking in March, August, and July
  • Best value balance: June, October, and September (about 27% below peak pricing)

When Is the Best Weather in San Juan?

For spending time outdoors, December through April is the sweet spot. This is the drier season, when beach days feel easiest and it is a pleasant time for seaside walks or exploring Castillo San Felipe del Morro without racing the afternoon rain. If you are comparing San Juan weather by month, these are the months that most favor long, warm days outside.

By late summer and into fall, September through November bring the heaviest rain and the muggiest heat, so it's the season to build in a slower indoor rhythm. Those wetter stretches are good for museum hopping and culinary tours, lingering at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico or strolling the galleries in Old San Juan between meals.

When Is the Cheapest Time to Visit San Juan?

The cheapest time to visit San Juan is usually October, September, and June, when hotel prices run about 31% lower than the most expensive months. If you are watching San Juan hotel prices, this window offers meaningful savings without giving up easy access to the beach and the city’s main sights.

For travelers looking for a strong price-to-experience tradeoff, June, October, and September typically deliver the best overall value, with rates about 27% below peak. To shave a little more off the bill, try checking in on a Tuesday and avoiding Saturday, as this is typically the priciest night of the week.

When Is San Juan Most Crowded?

San Juan sees the biggest crowds in March, August, and July, when visitor levels are roughly 1.8 times higher than during the calmest periods. If you are aiming for the least crowded time to visit San Juan, October, September, or May tend to feel easier, especially for enjoying Paseo de la Princesa or touring El Morro with a bit more space.

Top-rated properties also fill up sooner in August, March, and July. If those San Juan peak season dates are on your radar, you can expect popular beachfront and Old San Juan stays to be sold out earlier.

How Far in Advance Should You Book San Juan Hotels?

Travelers book farther ahead for some months than others: November trips are typically reserved about 44 days in advance, while July stays are booked around 29 days ahead. Use that as your guide — start your search earlier for November or other busy windows, and lock in your stay sooner if your plans fall in late summer or March, when top spots tend to fill.

Trip length trends can help too. Stays average about 3 nights in June and around 2.5 nights in November, so shorter trips can disappear fast around popular weekends. Flexible rates are widely used year-round (about 58% of bookings), peaking near 61% in February and dipping to roughly 54% in October, so expect a bit more flexibility early in the year than in early fall.
