“We selected Taawaki Inn to be near Sedona, without being “in” Sedona. We travelled with our German Shepherd, so it was nice they allowed dogs for a reasonable price. We were 20-30 minutes from Cathedral Rock or Bell Tower, easy peasy. What was a surprise is the cute old town area of Cottonwood, the charming historic clarkdale and driving up to the old mining town of Jerome. Directly outside the monument proper sits the uncovered remains of a pit dwelling originally constructed in 1850. The dwelling would have been covered inside an oblate oval "cocoon" of mud and clay supported by beams and poles situated in the holes you see here. It would have been a relatively comfortable dwelling in all seasons. With a single opening for a door, the coolness of the interior would have been maintained during the hot summer. In the winter, a fire pit directly under the only opening in the roof would have provided enough heat (with the door closed off by leather or cloth) to keep the inhabitants warm and dry.

"The toilet in our room is almost not working, the shower head is leaking, and the soundproofing is very poor. We were also assigned a room next to the laundry room, and the noise from the machines made it impossible for my family to sleep after a full day of driving. When I went to the front desk to ask if it would be possible to change rooms if one became available, the male staff member was very impatient and his attitude made us feel very uncomfortable during our stay."
