![This vaudeville-era theater first opened in 1914 in the Central Texas town of Brownwood. Although designed and operated as a performance space, like many small theaters, it was transitioned into a cinema in the 1920's. 

Brownwood was home to the US Army's Camp Bowie during WWII. During the late 30's and early 40's downtown Brownwood's population grew to 100,000 and had 7 cinemas operating at full tilt. As the war ended many of those closed and even the venerable Lyric was converted into a clothing store.

A century after its original opening, the Lyric is once again a home for the performing arts in Brownwood. A herculean restoration effort has restored the theater to its original glory and then some with the addition of modern staging, lighting and sound. Today live theater, musical acts and film once again grace this historic proscenium.

“We blew in at around 9:30 pm during the January Freeze. Gabe welcomed us with humor and warmth. He pointed us to the coffee and hot chocolate; and advised that the front desk was fully staffed 24/7! He was very helpful even lending assistance with a problem we had with our room and arranged for a later than usual check-out although that never happened... Room was like a little suite. Full sized fridge, real dishes, glasses, and silverware. Dishwasher to run after use. Though it seemed clean……

“I love this place so much!! The rooms were so cute and comfortable. The staff was amazing. There was a medium sized fridge (close to a full), microwave, love seat, desk, chair & coffee maker in the room. It reminded me of the 80's. It was so quiet that I didn't hear a thing all night. “The site advertised two queen-sized beds, but the place only has full-sized beds for their double rooms (I was there with my husband and pre-teenage son, so we needed two beds). Only two towels were allocated for the room; no washcloths, tissues, or even a trash can was/were provided. Dead bugs littered the floor. Crickets squeezed through the gap in the doorway and chirped in the room all night. The foot gap between the bottom of the curtain and the floor in front of the floor-to-ceiling window……

“Very cute 2 bedroom home. Even though it was an older outdated home, nothing fancy, it had everything we needed for our stay to be comfortable. We had a very small issue when we first arived with the sink & garbage disposal, but the property manager quickly stopped by to get it checked out and it worked fine. Great customer service 💯 My only complaint would probably just be the roads driving into the property, uneven dirt roads, and a good ways of a drive to reach the property, but once there……

“The property was very nice! There are 2 family dogs that are super friendly and my grandson enjoyed playing with them. They left fresh eggs for us and those were the best eggs I’ve ever had. The views are breathtaking! This was such a beautiful property. A perfect little get a way. Oh and the customer was excellent!”
