Niagara Falls Travel Guide Video

See the most powerful waterfall in North America thundering down and sending spray into the air in this famous Canadian city.

Niagara Falls is best known as the home of the Horseshoe Falls waterfall, one of Canada’s most iconic attractions. Take a boat ride to the waterfall’s base, walk through tunnels in the cliff behind it and take advantage of opportunities to view it from above to fully appreciate its commanding beauty. After viewing the falls, discover the city’s whimsical, Vegas-style attractions, which range from casinos to wax museums.

The dramatic Horseshoe Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, are the star attraction of Niagara Falls. Walk along the road overlooking the falls and watch more than 44 million gallons (168 million liters) of water surge over the 177-foot (54-meter) high cliff each minute.

Admire the falls during a boat tour on the Maid of the Mist, which has been operating since 1846. Ride one of these double-decker boats through the rapids at the base of the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls.

Take the Journey Behind the Falls tour for another perspective on this natural spectacle. Venture 150 feet (45 meters) down into the bedrock behind the falls by elevator. Watch the water tumbling down into the Niagara Gorge through viewing portals cut into the cliff face.

Learn how the falls originally formed on the Niagara’s Fury simulation ride. Feel the floor rumble and the temperature drop as you watch glaciers form, collide and melt on the 360-degree viewing screen.

As well as the natural wonder of the powerful waterfalls there’s also an impressive manmade attraction, the massive Niagara Fallsview Casino, which houses over 3,000 slot machines and 130 gaming tables. Head to the kitschy Clifton Hills entertainment promenade to tour wax museums and haunted houses or enjoy arcade games and mini-golf courses. Take a ride on the Niagara SkyWheel, which towers 175 feet (53 meters) high over the city, offering wonderful views of the falls and the Niagara River.

Get to Niagara Falls by bus from the U.S. or within Canada. Most of the popular attractions are found within walking distance of one another, making it easy to explore the city on foot.

Don’t miss this fun-filled city and one of Canada’s most renowned natural attractions.

Getting around Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is compact, with the key sights concentrated in walkable areas. Use the visitor-friendly WEGO bus system, though, and you can get around all the main tourist areas without having to walk. The city and regional bus network will take you to destinations further afield. Taxis and rental bikes are also popular. Rental cars are unnecessary in Niagara Falls itself, but handy for daytrips. Visit the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority website.Browse Niagara Falls rental cars.

Best time to visit

Unfortunately, Niagara Falls is not one of those destinations that is actually more enjoyable outside of peak season. It is at its best in the highly popular period between May and September, when the weather is warm and sunny, the skies are clear and the colorful flowers in the beautiful Botanical Gardens are in bloom. The famous falls themselves are most photogenic seen in the sunshine, too.
