Great vacation at the Esmeralda

Posted Jan 30, 2015
Pros: The staff are excellent. I really like the shuttle service into Playa del Carmen offered at a reasonable rate.
Cons: The beach area could use the most improvement.
Location: The location is great as it is closer to Playa del Carmen for the shoppers. Places like Xcaret which is totally awesome to visit.
We had a wonderful vacation. The service is excellent. The staff at this resort are the best. We were given a great room better than we expected. There were some minor maintenance issues but when we called they sent someone quickly. A couple of things got missed but we were not concerned. The food at the buffet is very good. We tried most of the a la cartes. We preferred the Asian and Italian. The pools are great with lots of activities if you wish. The pool bar was always busy. They were always willing to make the drinks you requested with top name liquors. We didn't attend any of the night shows. The beach is not the best for swimming. They do get lots of seaweed but they work very hard to clean up every day. You can walk either way along the beach to find a better spot to swim. I enjoyed the wildlife in the resort. I would return to this resort any time.

Decent bang for the buck

Posted Jan 25, 2015
Pros: The beach and pool areas are very nice and we never had a problem finding lounge chairs. Bar and wait staff are friendly and professional.
Our family had two ground floor garden rooms on the beach side of the resort. One smelled musty with minor repairs that needed attention but all in all was kept very clean by the great staff. It was a reasonably short walk to the lobby and buffet and there was no shortage of shuttles if you wanted one. We found the buffet meals to be quite good, but the individual restaurants were not worth the time to make the reservation. The staff were very attentive but the food ,thou well presented, was not what you would expect.

Food & alcohol poor quality. Long walks to restaurants. Hotel room smells which leaves your clothes smelling.

Crappy beach, great hotel

Posted Jan 24, 2015
Pros: Staff and food, and the kids club.
Cons: the building we were in (building 1) could use some reno. Was very old, bedrooms lacked charm.
Location: Playa del Carmen is very close and there are shuttles going there. Shopping and better beach at Playa del Carmen.
Staff is great, food is excellent, kids club amazing. The beach... not so much. Lots of Algae, brown sea, not much sand...

Great resort, terrible beach, and slow service.

Posted Jan 24, 2015
we booked a girls trip and all we wanted was clear blue water and white sandy beach. You cannot get your chairs real close to the water on the decent area of the beach with decent water. Down the beach you can, but the water is awful! You have to walk 10 minutes to another resort to get blue clear water and that gets old each day. None of the resort activities are free, they are all rather pricey honestly. The service is very slow at the restaurants. The guys that run the water sports are very rude towards women and make you feel uneasy.

pros: beds were comfortable, the area is very pretty and close to playa del Carmen, staff were friendly and helpful. Cons: the food was not very good, especially in the restaurants where yu need a reservation, the resort grounds are smelly, no complementary transportation to area attractions or airport.

Pros: nice restaurants
Location: Hotel is a little remote and need to take transportation to town, etc.
They have shuttles between the main hotel and the beach that are convenient.

BBGE

Pros: Clean and comfortable.
Cons: I couldn't get phone service.
Location: Fifth avenue was quite an experience. Also scheduled zip lining with ATV's.
Our stay was wonderful. The hotel staff couldn't of been more helpful. It is an eco-friendly resort and was in the middle of a jungle. Therefore there were animals all about. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The food was pretty good. Our adult daughter decided to go and the staff was nice enough to put her in our building. Each building has something close to it. There is a lot of walking due to the size of the resort. I didn't mind this, but if you don't like walking there are trams running constantly. Our Best Day concierge arranged a trip for us that was amazing. Tip: Don't expect perfection. There is no such thing. Just go with no expectations and you will have an amazing experience.
