Great location for hopping and the beachPosted Feb 23, 2014
If you are looking for a hotel that has charm and ambience, then this hotel may be for you. We enjoyed our five night all inclusive stay. The hotel is fifty steps from 5th Ave which has live music, shopping, bars and many nice restaurants. It reminded my wife and I of Bourbon St. except not as smelly and more laid back. The hotel staff is exceptional. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfy. The only negs. are that the beach is not user friendly and the food could use some improvement. The hotel sits right on the beach, but there are sandbags stacked up to keep the sand on the beach. If u don't like to swim and walk in the water then this hotel is perfect for you(my wife). I however, was determined to get my feet wet and flounder about on my back and gaze up at blue skies. Didn't happen like I imagined. Once over the sandbags, I found myself fighting to stay upright as I walked on rocks, bits of coral, and slimy sand. Needless to say, I cut my foot, which bled, on my very first day of vacation!!! I then had to hobble about for the remainder of my stay. It's not the hotels fault, but just beware! It is not a fun relaxing beach if you like to get in the water! Also, if you don't get down and claim a chair either poolside or beachside by about 8:30am, all of the chaise lounges will be taken! Get there early-ask for extra towels a the booth and claim your chairs! The food was ok. It's Mexico! They seemed to undercook the meats and eggs. Ask and they will cook

Great locationPosted Feb 21, 2014
Pros: Location, facilities, food.
Cons: The description of the standard rooms should be more accurate - no windows, tinny etc.
The reservation i had was for a standard room, which was below expectations in all regards. The biggest disappointment was that there was no window on this room. All resorts i have visited before and stayed at in the past had rooms with windows that open. This had a built in glass tinny window which i found unacceptable. After complaining to the stuff, i got a room which at least had small windows that opened such i could get fresh air (i have not used a/c at all during the stay as i am allergic to it). This room had another issue: the door lock would never work. The stuff made attempts to fix it, but every time we got a new set of keys, the keys would not work and we had to spend 20 min or so until someone can come and open the door for us. One evening my kid had to sleep in my arms for about 1/2 hour before we could get in the room. After this incident, we got moved into a suit which was indeed very nice: big, balcony. So my advice to whomever books this hotel is to book a suit (if they can afford it). The hotel was very clean and the facilities were in great conditions. The beach was clean but eroded, so there were sand bags to help re-built it. Small inconvenience for me who likes the beach more than the pool. Food was great, especially at the restaurants (i.e. not the buffet - i am not a big fan of buffet). The hotel is right on the beach, and it was 2 blocks from 5th which was convenient.

Nice hotel. Close to downtown and beach.Posted Feb 17, 2014
Pros: Everything. Location. Excellent hotel and service. I have been in more expensive resorts and have to say this is the best service I ever received.
Cons: More cabanas for shade on the beach. Remove the sandbags from beach.
Location: Everything is close. Great location. Close to beach, downtown, shopping, dining out, boat rentals, fishing, site seeing trips. Walked everywhere.
Had an awesome time. Excellent hotel and service. Everything was great. Hotel staff are wonderful and very efficient. In fact, I have been at numerous all inclusive resorts and this is the best service that we ever received. Staff are outstanding. They are friendly and do a great job and go out of there way to ensure that your needs are met. Loved the location. Close to beach and downtown. Walked the beach everyday. Had an awesome time. Would go back again.

Inedible food and Useless beachPosted Jan 15, 2014
Cons: Food quality...Your local Taco Bell has higher standards
Location: Hotel is right in the heart of 5th ave where all the really nice restaurants and bars are. Most likely the only positive thing about the place.
The only rationalization for the positive reviews on the food is that they are employees leaving them. The food in every restaurant was worse than any hospital food. It was so bad at points that we just skipped meals. My wife and I had to eat off the resort (When we already paid for an all inclusive) because we were starving. I find it insulting to think that they feel this food is worth paying for. The beach is basically useless. There is no swimable area where you can be more then 2 feet submerged. You also can not go out far at all as it is all rock formations. Understand that this place is literally All inclusive by the virtue that its gross food and drink are included and that is it! Everything was an extra fee...every employee is trying to sell you on something. Pool: The pool areas are tiny (there are only 2) and if you love having screaming kids splashing next to you then your in for a treat Overall: If you can get this place cheap and are looking for a bare bones place to stay with no regard for food quality this is the place for you. As far as I am concerned I would rather of stayed home.

Another Amazing Girls' Trip at Gran Porto Real!Posted Dec 28, 2013
Pros: Many of the staff are at Gran Porto Real year after year. Apparently we are memorable too as we are known as the "Senoritas from Wisconsin!"
Cons: The check-in seems to take a long time, but then we're probably just anxious to get to our rooms, changed and out to the pool/ocean!
Location: Shopping/checking out the cantinas on 5th is a must. The parasailing, snorkeling, side tours to ruins and the ferry to Cozumel are great activities.
We're a group of friends who met mainly through work. It all started with the plan of celebrating our 50th birthdays in Mexico together. 10 years later we still make this an annual trip - to Playa del Carmen and to Gran Porto Real! From the moment we step into the lobby to check-in to the moment we step back on our grand transport after a week of sun/fun, we are treated like "queens" as Ivan in the dining room would say. This year was no different. Any issues with things in the rooms were handled quickly, leaving us plenty of time to sit poolside or oceanside, take long walks on the beach, participate in the water aerobics, spanish & salsa lessons and volleyball. Shopping on 5th is a must as well as taking in the lights in the evening and visiting the various cantinas. The food at Maria's, Il Pescatore and the Albatross is equally elegant and good at any of these restaurants. This trip is one that we look forward to all year long and it goes by much too quickly! Let's see...we're only 348 days away from leaving on next years' trip! Our favorite staff this year was: David & Miguel from the Tiki bar, Verlaine, Arturo, Michelle, Angie, Oswaldo, Deborah & Omar from the activities staff, Theresa, Jose, Pablo, Jesus, & Calis from the pool/ocean wait staff and Ivan & Mateo from the dining room. We are always well-taken care of by these friendly hardworking staff. We so appreciate it and we can't wait to see you all next year! Feliz Navidad!

ResortPosted Dec 26, 2013
Pros: The wait staff was excellent.
Cons: The Reception Staff is not very accommodating.
Location: Location is great.
When we got to the resort they did not have our reservation. We got an excellent room the first night then had to move to "what I define" as a substandard room for the rest of the vacation. The "Standard Room" do not look anything like what is on their website. I would not recommend accepting a Standard Room.

Hope u like double beds.Posted Dec 15, 2013
A group of us went we had 4 rooms not one of us got the room that we had or thought we had paid for. The only way we could have it is by upgrading or paying more. The front desk staff was not helpful at all - they must have taken a salesman course. If u didn't pay more they weren't interested in helping. BUT the staff in the restaurants by the pool cleaning the rooms the spa were excellent. Great location right by 5th avenue.

Food was pretty bland. We have had much better in Mexico.
