Excellent hotel for families with small children

Posted Apr 17, 2014
Pros: It's tranquility and very good food.
Cons: Room comfort could be improved by providing a fridge in every room, free of charge. Paying extra for it just doesn't make absolutely no sense.
Location: Great beach nearby, 5th ave for shopping and food is just a block away...
We have looked for about a month for a place to go with our two small children, a toddler and a baby. Our decision was based on proximity to the beach and restaurants, tranquility of resort's environment, and inclusion of a meal plan (either all inclusive or half board). Since Mahekal looked as a hotel which encompasses all of the above, we had a go. And we weren't disappointed! It went above and beyond what we were looking for: the hotel is right by a pretty beach (pools aren't bad as well, except for the fact it gets pretty warm in hot weather), accomodations in palapas are an experience (in comparison to boring hotel rooms), environment in the resort is very peaceful (pools and the beach are far enough not to bother; one can hear a bit of music from a nearby club, but only during the day), the food is also very good (to a degree rarely seen in all-inclusive/ half board places). All in all, we are looking forward to return to this place again.

We will definitely be back!

This hotel was such a wonderful escape for my husband and I! The rooms are lovely, the grounds are so well cared for and it's right on the beach which you can't beat! No needing to get up and reserve chairs in the morning on the beach, there were always plenty. The breakfast and lunch was our favorite. We liked exploring 5th ave for dinner better than the provided dinner. The beds were a little hard for our taste but extra pillows helped. If you are looking for a place with wi fi everywhere and TVs in the room, this is not the place for you. This is a place to get away from it all. Boli at the concierge was wonderful to us and helped us book excursions for a good price!

Best of both worlds: quiet but near the action

Posted Apr 12, 2014
We really enjoyed our stay. You could tell there were people but it was still very quiet and private. If you want a relaxing and tropical getaway this is the place for you. It was a true escape from your typical overcrowded resort. The staff was friendly and the resort was very well kept and clean. Many times in the evening we were the only ones in the pools and you could always find a beach chair on the beach. The best part was that we were right on the beach but still just a couple minutes walk from 5th ave. Perfect location! You can walk for over an hour down 5th ave and not run out of great shops and restaurants. Some people may be deterred by the fact the resort is "unplugged" (no tv/phone in rooms) but we never missed it and wifi is available in the lobby area. We stayed in a garden view room which was actually really nice because it was so much more quiet and private than the ocean view rooms but you're still only a 30 second walk to the beach. The one thing that could have been better was that our room wasn't ready when we got there and although we saw all the other guests getting help with their luggage to their rooms, we did not receive the same service (We look young so maybe it was a little bit of ageism). We did receive great service for the remainder of our stay. Tip: ask for a tour of the resort... We didn't even discover the other half of the resort with the nicer pool and hot tub for the first two days!

A well run quality resort with a caring staff.

Posted Apr 7, 2014
Pros: Everything. Young children are welcome (we took our granddaughter age 12 - she was a little bored at first but had a good time with friends she met.
Cons: Food quality (mainly dinner) was good but not as good as two years ago. About 7-8 on scale of 10. Good value for prices charged. We will come back.
Location: Great location - north end of town.
Quality accommodations, well maintained grounds, good beachfront, plenty of beach chairs and palm trees, several areas to clean beach shoes and rinse off.

Great hotel, close to the beach and to city center (shopping and restaurants walking distance) I love the lack of TV and phones! Love the landscaping and trees! Excellent food and service! We will be back for sure

staff was excellent and most accommodating.

Relaxing trip - accommodations were perfect for us - very low key. The beach was a bit crowded and not the prettiest but very pleasant. Food was good, not outstanding, but again, perfect for us. The staff was wonderful and made everyone feel as if they were their favorite guest.

Mahekal Beach Resort

Posted Mar 31, 2014
Mahekal Beach Resort is one of the most beautifull hotels in PDC. They are going through an upgrade to there rooms. Our room wasent upgraded yet. Stayed at this resort years ago fell in love with it. That being said it can be very expensive to stay in some rooms, and you may find other hotels with a better price. We stayed in room 10 P, the location was excellent great view of the sea and large deck on the second floor. Breakfast and lunches very good. We ate dinner there the first night because we got in so late. I am a food snob and very good cook so im overly critical on food. The staff in all departments are excellent. The security is excellent. There is some odor on occasion as alot of people have mentioned nothing that was a big deal. The beach in the front of the Resort is the best in Playa, plenty of Palapas with chairs so you dont have to get out early. Manuale is the best beach waiter. I would like to mention please tip your house keepers and bartenders even if they say tip included if they gave you excellent services.
