Head to the heart of the largest city in Missouri for its cultural hotspots, nightlife and a colossal monument that towers over the Mississippi River.

Downtown St. Louis is a 1-square mile (2.5-square kilometer) hub of shops, museums, restaurants and entertainment by the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. Spend a day visiting Downtown St. Louis to enjoy its architectural wonders, green spaces and family attractions.

Start big with a visit to the Gateway Arch, a spectacular riverside structure that curves to a height of 630 feet (192 meters). The country's tallest national monument commemorates the westward expansion of the United States. Trace the history of 19th-century settlers by exploring the free museum then take the tram to the top of this city icon. On clear days you can see up to 30 miles (48 kilometers) away.

When you come back down to earth stroll through the green surrounds of the Gateway Arch National Park, then continue with your downtown exploration. Sitting within the shadow of the arch is the Old Courthouse, an early 19th-century building inspired by ancient Greek architecture. Walk the halls where many enslaved African Americans sued for their freedom.

For hours of family entertainment head to City Museum. This former warehouse was converted into a giant funhouse of tunnels, bridges, slides, castles and secret passages. Then head for Citygarden and its children's spray plaza, fountains and sculptures.

Tap into the musical pulse of the city at the Washington Avenue district. Visit the National Blues Museum to learn about the history and legacy of Blues music and its influence on American popular music. Stay for live performances which are hosted at the end of the week and on weekends. Catch more live music in nearby bars and clubs.

Downtown St. Louis is also the home of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. Watch a match at their Busch Stadium home ground then head to the adjacent Ballpark Village, a sports-themed entertainment district of bars, restaurants and nightlife venues.

Travel to Downtown St. Louis attractions by Metrolink light rail, downtown trolley or by walking along the wide pedestrian sidewalks. There are also bike lanes throughout the neighborhood.

Nice stay
The room I originally booked was not available, due to the hotel over booking. I was given a business class room at the same rate. I was unaware of the valet parking fee of $50. The staff was great and the hotel was nice and convenient for what I was in town for.
