"Great hotel"
I usually stay in nice hotels, i travel a lot on business. I never write reviews, except on the rare occasions I am really impressed. This is a classy hotel in a nice part of town. Much better than all the hotels on Market St or Union Sq or SoMa areas.

The hotel staff was extremely helpful. The concierges gave us excellent advice about nearby restaurants. Our room in the tower was gorgeous and we loved our stay. We hope to return soon!

Great hotel right in center of SF. Swanky and cool, the hotel strikes a particular sophistication at just the right level. The dimly lit lobby evoked the thought that I might at anytime be walking past a rock star, tech executive, or undercover vampire. If you dig that vibe, this is a great spot. Only issue I had was that the bathtub in my bathroom had a few scrapes that tarnished the rest of the otherwise amazing junior suite. Would definitely recommend - alongside the character, it presented good value for the money when compared to other hotels in the vicinity.

"Great value, highly recommended all around"
It was my husband's birthday and we were looking for a quick weekend getaway to celebrate. Online booking was a breeze (way to go, Expedia!) We were settled comfortably in no time, thanks to the attentive front desk staff. Our room had 2 queen beds with a city view. It was well appointed, smoke and scent-free, very quietly nestled on the 15th floor. We knew we were going to a historic building and adjusted our expectations accordingly. The bathroom is small compared with those found in newer hotels, but it was not as bad as what we read in some reviews. The Starlight Room on the 21st floor is a definite plus, for its view and vintage ambience. The music was not bad either. It's not for the younger, 20s-30s crowd. As a couple in our mid-40s with young teen daughters who enjoy arts and cuisine, the restrained, friendly vibe was definitely to our liking. From bellhop to the red and gold-attired beefeaters, to reception staff - the level of hospitality is wonderful. La Scala Bistro is one elevator ride down. Its short but carefully crafted menu is an extension of the warmth of hotel service. For short stays, trade housekeeping (save water) for free drinks and other offers. For chocoholics and treats, we went to Tout Sweet Patisserie, known to locals for great pastries & espresso, located on the 3rd floor of Macy's (yes, the department store). Desigual and UniqClo are go-to for comfortable, quality clothes' shopping. Ruby Skye for heady, bass-heavy dancing is nearby. Fun!

Where to stay in Union Square

Pocket Guide: Union Square, San Francisco Historic Hotels

Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman's Wharf.
