Nice hotel and great location!

Posted May 20, 2015
Pros: The location of this hotel is great for walking to just about everything interesting in this area. Surprisingly, very quiet regarding outside noise.
All of the staff exceeded our expectations. Arrived 2 hours earlier than our 3:00 PM check-in and was given a room immediately.

Nice for the money

Posted May 1, 2015
Pros: Excellent Staff. Easy check in and out. Location
Cons: Funky smell to the room. Looks clean so not sure where it came from. Bed was not very comfortable.
Location: Shopping. Restaurants. Artsy area.
Staff member at check in was exceptionally helpful. Location is convenient. Price was exceptional- 200.00 less than I would have spent at the hotel I normally use when in NY.

Budget friendly, clean, basic place to crash

Posted Apr 24, 2015
Pros: Location, price
Cons: They need an answering system on the phone so that, if the one person at the desk needs to step away, they can receive and return messages.
Location: Right on Houston St, easy to get anywhere. But be aware that there is currently construction right outside the door and street noise can be annoying.
This hotel worked out well for a mother-daughter weekend in NYC. Easy access to everywhere we wanted to go. We were a little concerned when we first saw the place. No lobby to speak of, inattentive front desk staff, ugly wallpaper, dark hallways, small room. But it was clean (no bed bugs that we noticed) and surprisingly comfortable.

No longer The Gem, now The Gatsby

Posted Apr 6, 2015
Whilst the hotel itself is pretty basic it's location couldn't be better if you're looking to enjoy the Lower East Side Side and convenient access to all the city's major attractions. Breakfast is not included but that is fairly standard. However you can grab a 'knish' and coffee from Yonah's next door. The local bar scene is well worth investigation; the Library and Back Room became firm favourites. Back to the hotel, it came under new management during our stay, so I expect there will be changes to come. My advice to the new owners would be to upgrade the lower ground floor which was very noisy and uncomfortable and promote Anthony on the front desk who immediately sorted any issues was always welcoming and made the Gatsby a joy to stay in.

Not good enough

Posted Apr 5, 2015
The staff was excellent, but the room was so small that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone

Ok but...

Posted Apr 5, 2015
Elevator to take you from street level to first floor was 'offline' so you had to carry luggage up and down the steps. When we got to second floor, we had to maneuver around all the linen stacked on the floor in a very narrow hallway. When we opened the door to halfway, it hit the bed...I won't go there again.

Pleasant Room Convenient for East Village and SOHO

Posted Mar 30, 2015
Pros: This hotel on Houston is easy walking distance from all the places in SOHO and the East Village that I visited.
Location: Lot's of restaurants and bars to choose from within walking distance.
My small but satisfactory first floor room was offered me since I was checking in early and was already made up. There was street maintenance outside my window, but it didn't start until 7AM so it wasn't an issue for me.

Excellent location and very comfortable!

Posted Mar 28, 2015
Pros: location
Cons: check-in process-just b/c I arrive late, doesn't mean I shouldn't get a decent room
Location: Lower East Side and SoHo-so happening and fun!!!!
Small rooms, but the location is incredible. Worth the DEAL we got on Expedia, but not sure I would pay more. We checked in late-our flight was scheduled to land 8:30pm and then was late, by the time we got there, we were given a room on "C", which meant CELLAR!!! needless to say, I had been left in that room, I never would have returned. The hotel made good and moved us to the 5th floor the next morning-that room was excellent. GREAT view (good even see the new World Trade Center out of the window) and the room was a little bit bigger. Hotel staff really seemed to want to please us. The house-keeping staff was the BEST I've ever had in a hotel. VERY accommodating.

Nice hotel with friendly staff

Posted Mar 25, 2015
The hotel was close to a subway stop and located near some good bars. The hotel staff was very friendly and stored our luggage for us after we checked out of the hotel. The rooms are clean, but small.
