A Grand Hotel with Character and LuxuryPosted Dec 4, 2014 on Hotels.com
I love this hotel! Decor is in need of TLC - aren't we all? I stayed at a guest house round the corner from here two weeks prior, about the same price, nice deco but room half the size, no desk and shared toilet/shower and no breakfast after 8. Here the room was a good size, desk, comfortable bed and my own bathroom and bath!! Had a lovely bath. Everything was very clean. As well as that, decent times for breakfast and the full English was fabulous!! The sea across the road; I didn't have the great view but I wouldn't have expected it at that price - besides, it was dark apart from the morning. The staff were very helpful. So nice to be in a hotel - it is a grand hotel - lovely to be able to afford to stay here. If I can get a room, I will be staying there again next week.

poor- spend some money on it.Posted Nov 21, 2014 on Hotels.com
dated hotel, dated room particularly the green bathroom, room was a good size however. no matress protector, no security door lock, heating was luke warm at best. radiator far too small for size of room, cooked breakfast was dry and cold. wifi did not work in the room as advertised, wifi not fast enough to download basic info for business users. Didn't like the fact you had to leave a £10 deposit for the TV remote control (I doubt I would have seen it again if I had forgot to bring the remote back from the room on check out) however I guess price wise & Sea front location what can you expect.

Hotel? Really.....Posted Nov 18, 2014 on Hotels.com
Staff not welcoming on arrival, there was no mention of a night club on making the booking, however under the hotel was a noisy nightclub that started from 12 until 4am. Hardly any sleep at all for the 2 nights. The lift was very noisy as you could hear the motor running from in the room everytime it was used. A very run down hotel. I will not be recommending.

Lovely hotel,but in need of a bit of T.L.C.Posted Nov 18, 2014
Pros: The receptionist Joanne was a joy to deal with,we were down for a funeral, and this girl was so helpfull and nothing was too much trouble for her.
Cons: Redecoration in bedrooms.
Location: Right on the front, beautiful views, close to the shops and restaurants, and very friendly locals.
Hotel has been lovely in its day,but needs a handyman to do some cosmetic work,ie,wallpaper coming off walls, bedroom furniture a bit drab, window sills rotten etc.The dining room was lovely, the breakfast amazing and plenty of it.The waiter David was so attentive to us. The room we were in was large,,and the beds were clean and comfortable.Great value for the money. Overall we enjoyed our stay at this hotel, thank you to all.

Enthusiastic staff, clean and warm room.Posted Nov 11, 2014
Pros: Free parking directly in front of the hotel, the sea is literally 'across the road' , close proximity of very good restaurants and friendly pubs.
Cons: The hotel could doubtless be restored to its former glory but would then be obliged to charge prices to reflect that.
Location: A wonderful day out can be had at the Beamish cultural museum . The coast driving North has many interesting historical places of interest.
The hotel has undoubtedly seen grander days but is comfortable and clean with large rooms . The décor is a bit dated , although the beds seemed quite new . However the prices charged are circa1980's prices, so therefore 'good value for money'. The disco noise was not a problem, I was on the third floor over the disco entrance and am not a music fan. A great advantage of the hotel ( for me ) was the lack of unruly and noisy children running around. The breakfast selection was good and well cooked and presented.

Room with a view - but LOUD!!Posted Nov 11, 2014
Pros: The room, the staircases, the art on the walls and the breakfast - a very good full English.
Cons: Insulating the main hotel rooms from the noise coming from the "Deep" nightclub below stairs. Remotes for the TV should be available in the rooms.
Location: Great for sea views; handy for Whitley Bay town centre and beach walks. The rail station with links to Newcastle city centre is 10 minutes walk away.
The Rex is an interesting mixture. Great location, great views if your room overlooks the beach and some nice hints of faded grandeur - sweeping staircases and a deliberate over-loaded used of paintings, prints and drawings on the corridor walls. But it is tired, it is dated and - if you stay, as we did, at the weekend, it is very loud... the music thumping from the nightclub in the bowels of the hotel is really too much for anyone not intent on throwing some shapes on the dance floor until 3am. No doubt the club helps subsidise the running of the hotel but they really need to invest in some seriously good sound insulation to make staying in the rooms at the weekend acceptable. I liked our room; spacious with two double beds and a decent bathroom. All very 1980s (apart from the too-small LED TV) - and a great view over the promenade and beach. The standard of clientelle was perhaps given away when I rang down to ask about a remote for the TV as there wasn't one in the room. "Ah," said the receptionist, anticipating my request, "the remote? Yes, we have them at reception for a £10 deposit. Otherwise you can use the buttons on the side of the TV." Hmmm. I unfortunately left my phone charger in the room when we left. I phoned after we got home to ask if it had been found by housekeeping. Two calls later the hotel said they had four chargers but when I described mine, they said it was not among their collection. My own fault, for sure, but still disappointing.
